Marshanika Rich
When Marshanika Rich grew up in Washington, DC, she observed her mother’s ability to work hard, save, pay for the family’s expenses and still afford to enjoy life. While it seemed like her mom had it all figured out, she realized as an adult that her mother had to teach herself the value of saving first, and that many people in her community didn’t have the same money management skills. And, while her mother tried to impart that wisdom to Marshanika, she had to go through her own hardships to truly grasp the financial lessons.
“I had a credit card at 17 and wrecked my credit because I didn’t understand that I had to pay it all back!”
Going through the experience of making financial mistakes and working hard to repair her credit instilled empathy for others who may run into the same pitfalls. Marshanika has also gained an in-depth understanding of small business owners’ financial concerns, having launched her own business in tax preparation at a young age. With her mother serving as her first client, Marshanika went on to prepare taxes for her family members and people in her surrounding community. It’s the family and community connection that provides motivation to make Rich Tax Services about more than just tax preparation; but to further personal financial education so people are empowered to make smart decisions.
“We only know what’s around us. My mom didn’t know anything about finance until she taught herself. A lot of people in my community don’t know anything about finance. I want to help people not just file their taxes, but change their mindsets on money so they can meet their long-term goals.”
Rich Tax Services specializes in supporting small business owners, those who are new to the workforce and others with limited money management experience because these are the people that have inspired Marshanika in her life.
